Three Main Differences Between Red and White Wines

For the first-timer, you might be messed up what to try, red or white wine? Usually, a first-timer will always have this guide: Sauvignon Blanc as a dry white wine, or Merlot or Pinot Noir as red wine are good choices. But, do you know why?   1. Colors

In the market, we know it as red and white. Red comes from red grapes and white wine comes from white grapes. However, experts believe that there were only one species of grape called Vitis Vinifera which was red grapes and by the process of natural mutation, it transformed into white grapes. Furthermore, the most important fact is that red wines are fermented with the grapes’ skin and seed while white wines are pressed off the skin and seeds before being fermented. 

2. Glass

There are several glasses can match. First, is the burgundy glass which formed like a bulbous bowl and tall on a stem. This glass is used exclusively for red wines. Whereas white wines should not be served in a burgundy glass but the all-purpose white wine glass is perfectly fit for red wines. Wine is perfect to be poured in clear glass. That’s why plastic glasses or cups don’t belong to wine.

3. Storage

Red wines are usually aged in the oak barrel while white wines are stored in stainless vats. The most notable differences between red and white wines are the oxidation process that causes wines to lose their fruity notes and changes into rich, nutty flavors, and more smoothness. Oak barrels are used to increase oxygen while stainless steel tanks are used to reduce oxygen. That’s why white wines are retained for their fruitiness.
